LEXINGTON, S.C. – A Lexington County deputy shot in the line of duty has been awarded the South Carolina Sheriffs’ Association’s Medal of Valor.
Deputy Jacob Smith was shot after responding to a home invasion at a Lexington home last September.
“Jacob acted bravely and selflessly when he found himself in an intense situation last year,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said. “Even as his recovery continues, Jacob continues to embody what makes him a great law enforcement officer…the willingness to help others and serve his community.”
Koon said Smith took fire from a man who also shot and killed a woman with whom the man had a prior relationship.
“I’m proud of Jacob for receiving this important award,” Koon said. “His actions protected other deputies and likely saved lives.”
Smith was recognized Thursday at the South Carolina Sheriffs’ Association’s winter conference and banquet in Columbia.
