Lexington County Sheriff’s Department patrol deputy Derris Prater has been named the Lexington County employee of the quarter for his actions following a motor vehicle crash in June.
“While on his way to the crash scene, Deputy Prater was advised the vehicle had struck a house and was on fire,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said. “He arrived to find the driver trying to get of the burning car. He then assisted the driver, who was intoxicated and unable to get out on his own power, out of and away from the car.”
According to the nomination form submitted by Prater’s sergeant, his “quick and selfless action saved the driver’s life.”
Prater joined the Sheriff’s Department in October 2014. He serves in the department’s north patrol region, which is based near Irmo.
