Sheriff Jay Koon has completed the 114th session of the National Sheriffs’ Institute, a program designed to train sheriffs on the challenges facing law enforcement today.

The five-day course is co-sponsored and funded by the National Institute of Corrections and the National Sheriffs’ Association. Koon and 26 other sheriffs attended the session in Aurora, Colorado April 9-13.

“Sheriff Koon is a leader with vision for the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department,” said Hilary Burgess, NSA Director of Professional Development. “It is an honor to have Sheriff Koon join the more than 2,900 graduates of the NSI since 1973.”

“I’m pleased to have been a part of this national program made possible by two of the most recognizable organizations in law enforcement,” Koon said. “The relationships established with the more than two dozen other sheriffs who attended will benefit every level of the Sheriff’s Department as we’ll stay connected and continue to share information about law enforcement trends being seen across the country.”

The course focused on teaching sheriffs how to provide effective leadership for the public good in public safety, community relations, criminal justice system policy, and organization effectiveness and efficiency, according to the NSA.
