You’ve probably seen them just as I have. Seasonal fireworks stands are popping up across the county.
In the weeks leading up to the Fourth of July, many families are planning to buy fireworks to celebrate and enjoy some time together this summer.
Most fireworks are legal for purchase in South Carolina, but there are some laws and tips to make sure you stay safe when using them.
Explosives like M-80s and cherry bombs are illegal in South Carolina. If law enforcement finds someone using these, the items will be seized.
Children under the age of 16 aren’t allowed to purchase fireworks, and state-approved vendors should clearly display two permits – one outside the stand and one inside along with their license. If a vendor does not have these, they are operating illegally.
If you choose to purchase and set off fireworks, here are some ways to do so safely:
- Always read the package to fully understand the directions.
- Don’t drink and play with fireworks.
- Don’t allow children to play with fireworks; have them stand a safe distance back while adults set them off.
- Set the fireworks off in an open area so you don’t cause a fire.
- Don’t hold a firework while it’s going off and don’t point them toward anyone.
- Wet used fireworks before placing them in a trash bin.
If you don’t plan to attend a fireworks show and want to set off your own, please practice good judgment to limit the chances of somebody getting hurt or causing damage to property.
