It seems every few weeks we’re hearing from Lexington County residents who’ve received a phone call from someone claiming to be a Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputy offering to help them with an old traffic ticket or get out of jury duty.
There’s always a catch, of course, because these calls are from scammers…not deputies.
These law enforcement imposters often instruct people to go buy pre-paid credit cards, call them back and read the numbers over the phone.
We never handle outstanding arrest warrants or traffic fines with pre-paid credit cards. If someone asks you to read card numbers or any other personal information over the phone, it’s most likely a scam.
If you think you’ve been scammed, call us. Providing as many details as possible is an important first step in protecting yourself and others in the community.
We offer free scam and fraud prevention workshops. For more information, contact Capt. Mark Jones at 803-785-2549 or mjones@lcsd.sc.gov.
