Next week is National Volunteer Week. I applaud anyone who believes in a cause or organization enough to give their time, talent and resources to take part in the work that’s being done.
I’d like to tell you about a group of people who I see as the ultimate volunteers.
Reserve deputies have a vital role at the Sheriff’s Department. By volunteering their time to assist the agency, they help us provide even better services to the county while saving you, the taxpayer, money. They do all of this while sacrificing time away from their families to supplement the number of full-time, sworn officers who are assigned to road patrol duties.”
Maybe you’re interested in serving your county and fellow citizens as a member of our reserve program. Our next reserve deputy training cycle starts Oct. 18.
Applications for a reserve deputy positions are available at our headquarters on Gibson Road or online at www.LexingtonSheriff.com. We need those back by May 12.
Under South Carolina law, reserve law enforcement officers must be 21 or older with a clean criminal record. You must have a high school diploma or its equivalent. Prospective Lexington County reserve deputies must pass a background investigation, polygraph examination, drug screening test and physical examination.
South Carolina law requires a reserve law enforcement officer to provide at least 60 hours of service every three months and attend monthly training sessions.
The upcoming reserve deputy training cycle will consist of training sessions every Wednesday between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. and every Saturday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. from Oct. 18 until March 7.
