Do you know when a scam is calling?
We’re told people are receiving phone calls from scam artists pretending to be from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department. The callers are reportedly telling people they will be arrested for various reasons unless they stay on the phone and transfer money using a prepaid card. They also have their voicemail set up to say you’re reaching LCSD if you try to call them back.
This is a scam, we will never ask you to transfer money from a prepaid card over the phone. If you receive a call like this, hang up and call the sheriff’s department directly at 803-785-8230.
Please let us know if you or anyone you know has been affected by this scam. If you’d like to learn more about protecting yourself by taking a free scam and fraud prevention workshop, contact Capt. Mark Jones at 803-785-2549 or mjones@lcsd.sc.gov.
