I want to remind parents and caregivers that children should ride as safely as possible—every trip, every time. And see us buckle up—every trip, every time.
Do you know if your child is secured properly? Riding in an appropriate safety seat and restraint system?
- An infant under 2 must be secured in a rear-facing car seat in the rear seat of your vehicle until they reach the height/weight limits allowed by the manufacturer.
- A child who is at least 2 or under 2 and has outgrown the height/weight limits of the car seat, can be secured in a forward-facing car seat in the rear seat of your vehicle.
- Children at least age 4, who have outgrown their forward-facing car seat, must be secured by a booster seat in the rear seat of your vehicle until they reach the height/weight requirements for an adult safety belt. Lap and shoulder belts must be used.
- A child at least age 8 or at least 57 inches tall may be restrained by an adult safety belt if they can be secured properly by that seat belt. The shoulder belt should cross the center of the child’s chest, not their neck. The lap belt should fit across the child’s thighs/hips, not their abdomen.
