We typically see an increase in car thefts and break-ins when the summer months arrive. It’s a crime of opportunity. They’re not planned. A bad guy sees that he has the chance to commit the act at that moment and seizes it.

The best way to protect yourself – not to mention your car and belongings – against theft or break-in – is to make sure your car and your stuff isn’t an easy target for criminals by:

  • Always taking your keys and not leaving them in or on your vehicle;
  • Closing windows and locking doors;
  • Parking in well-lit areas;
  • Never leaving valuables in your vehicle, especially where they can be seen;
  • Never leaving the area while your vehicle is running; and
  • Keeping your vehicle in your garage, if possible.

Radios and wheel covers aren’t the only popular stolen vehicle parts thieves take. They want whatever sells, from the mandated labeled parts to those that aren’t. Among some of the most popular parts or items left in vehicles are: engines, transmissions, air bags, radios, GPS units, phones/iPods, laptops, and purses.

Always make sure these types of items are brought inside with you every time you get out of your car.
